Glass Roof

Is it true that the glass roofs are not a dealer ordered option on the GT500's (only GT's)?

I searched the site and only found this relevant post but it sounds like its aftermarket?

You can not get a glass roof on a GT500 from the factory. There are places that do put them in but it is aftermarket and can cost more than getting it from the factory if it were an option. I don't know if the 2010 GT500 will have that option or not. I know the owner of a shop that installs these on Mustang GT's and he said that it really stiffens up the car.

It actually stiffens the body? I would think it weakens the body.

Glass doesn't flex or give like the metal roofs.

Oh true, but it does break / crack. I asked my local dealer and thy said it was GT only. Just wanted to verify with you guys. Say you guys seem to know alot and have some direct resources. Do you guys work at a Ford manufacturing plant? :D

That is high tempered safety glass they use. If we did work at Ford, then we wouldn't be holding back on the options and features that everyone wants plus you would be able to custom order the you want. They wouldn't be having the money problems they are having now if we were there.

drove a new mustang gt "twister" from a local company that makes em, and they also put a glass roof in. Very nice, seems very tight and quiet, and is quite enjoyable, not at all what I expected from a glass roof. I think I expected it to be more like the t tops in my in my 79 trans am.

Yep - the Dude is right. We welcome all folks. Having a Mustang is cool - but not a prerequisite.

I spent many years with Viracon, the company that makes one versoin of the glass roof. The product is laminated, and is not "glass" as one would think of glass. It is some tought stuff. Viracon also makes HRG glass that meets Florida building codes, the glass for the Pentagon that saved so many lives on 9/11, and the glass in nearly every skyscraper with architectural glass out there.

Just seeing this thread. The CDC Glassback roof is quite a bit stronger than the metal non-structural panel that it partially replaces. Here are some photos of the install that will shed some light on just how it works. Brief of install steps:

- Large hole is cut in metal roof panel.
- Two 'Fences' are installed, these are heavy foam barriers and the GB panel 'rides' on them. They also provide weather sealant, three layers of weather/wind barriers total.
- The GB panel is then 'set' with high strength expoxy adhesive.
- Weights are applied to the roof during the 24 hour curing time.
- A custom head-liner is included with each roof, and replaces the factory one.
The 2009 Mustang GT is the only one that can have the GB roof ordered as an option. There are 2010 GT500 renders that show the car with the GB roof, so it's probably going to be made available. I had mine done at Automotive Essentials in Rockville, MD; which is the only CDC Authorized installer in the Mid-Atlantic. The cost was $2,500 plus tax. They did an excellant job. If you order this at a Ford dealership as a dealer installed option, which can still be done, it is $3,000. The roof Ford installs at the factory is manufactured, custom panel, by CDC for Ford. Some of the trim pieces are a little different, more flush fitting, and the factory option for hte GTs has a manual sun-shade built into the head-liner.

I would love to have one on my car. Then you would loose the stripes on top. Would love to see one with stripes. I think AB has her Shelby with the glass roof. I think hers is the first and only one so far.

You can go with a perforated vinyl stripe that you can see through from the inside but looks like a solid stripe from the outside.

I had mine installed last summer. See this link for the StangNet GT500 project; my inspiration. Perf'd white vinyl and blue stripes, looks good Can't tell from about 10 ft. that the roof is glass, and from the inside 80% of GB look and feel stays.
