Default '67 Galaxie 500 w/ 390

Hey guys looking for some opinions. Today I passed a faded red 1967 Galaxie 500 parked in a driveway with a for sale sign in the window. It had 390 badges, looked all original, interior in pretty good shape and although the steering wheel spokes were in the way it looked like the odometer said 70k (of course could be 170/270 whatever). The sign said $5300. Don't think I want to go that high but assuming it runs does anyone think it is worth close to that? Anyone seen any of these for sale recently?
I'm really looking for a cheap beater to take some daily driving burden off the Shelby, but it is pretty tempting. I'm just kinda toying with the idea so if anyone else is seriously interested post up and I'll try to get some pics and more info.

Thanks

A nice two door hardtop could be worth that depending upon how there is any rust, how it runs etc.

A 4 door a lot less, imo.

It's a tough market for sellers. I don't think this car will ever be a super collectable but would have some interest if it were a 2 door.

Keep in mind what the car would be really worth to you. You could probably find a transportation beater for less money.

The 390 was never a popular engine. It was hard to keep tuned as I recall. A fellow I know had a Mustang he restored with one and I chose to avoid it.

If the odo hasn't wrapped, and the interior is in good condition it could be easily worth that. Galaxies with the big blocks were sleepers. I'd check eBay for recent sales.

Thanks Carnut. It's a 2-door fastback and appears pretty solid. I may have to go check it out a little closer and hear it run. I've admired it for quite some time, the for sale sign is new. It's in a neighborhood near my clinic that is heavily retired seniors so I imagine it's been there for a while. I hope someone isn't selling it to help make up for losses in their retirement account.

Your right about the beater and it's definately the way to go, BUT I've always been a sucker for those old over-powered land yachts. Honestly if it was a convertible it would probably be in my driveway right now.

I just looked at the list from BJ (2009 Scottsdale, put this in here for history)

A 65 Galaxie vert with a 390 sold for 31,900.

Carnut: Here's the two we drooled over:

#1281 with a 427 SOHC $137,500
#1573 with a 427 $132,000

Pictures of these will be coming this weekend when I get my trip report done.

I like the 67 Galaxie 500, especially the 2 door fastback. I used to have a 67 LTD 4 door way back when. It was a nice smooth riding car. Depending on how it looks, the condition of the paint and interior depends on how much it was worth. These are not high demanding cars by any means. They are probably really low in the desirable range so they really are not worth a whole lot.

just for other ideas, you can go to Old Ride Classic Car Classifieds - Buy Sell Classic Car and Truck Classifieds.. It's kind of an ebay for older cars. Pretty neat site to cruise around, although I still can't find my '78 LTD Country Squire Wagon anywhere.

If the body work and trim are damage free and complete, if the engine runs well and the car drives out nice and if the interior is decent and you really like the car, then it is worth the money it might be worth snapping up.

If it has mechanical problems, deduct accordingly. Same thing for other defects.

It will probably need a brake job right away.

I'm a sucker for the old cars, too. If the car is solid and you like it, offer them $4000. In this economy, they may take it. The kiddies aren't going to want it like they would a Mustang or Camaro, so it's a limited market that car appeals to. All they can do is say no or make a counteroffer.

And when you get it, we want pics!

I always thought the 2-door Galaxie's would be a nice cruiser. The 390 isn't bad, but it had some breathing problem IIRC. Swap out to some 428PI heads and headers, change the cam, and you'll have a whole different engine.

Here's a pic I found w/ a quick search...

390 4bbl was good engine ...only problem back then is that they still have points, so you'll definately want to add an electronic ignition and a good set of Mallory platinum points (if they still make them -lol) so you don't have to replace and adjust them every few months (the electronic ignition will just use the points as a switch so the contacts don't wear out ...just a dab of grease on the 'cam' twice year and the rubbing block will last a long time). Is it an auto? ...or T10 4-spd?

IIRC the 390 has silver flags on the side (and 427 had gold). The 2-door was a cool car and you could the move a small house in the trunk ;-)

Just sold mine last year. I've had it for 25 years. Just 58,000 original miles and never been in the snow. Mine was a 390 4-speed. It originaly had an automatic but the previous owner converted it right after he bought it.
I pretty much gave it away for $5,500.
