Default Father's Day Thread

Hope someone hasn't already started a thread...if so the mods can move this post into it and delete this one.

I think Father's Day is a good day to think about how our Dads have shaped our lives. Feel free to tell a story about your dad.

When I was about 9 years old, my dad bought a 1970 Pontiac Lemans. It was the first new car he'd ever bought. He wanted to take very good care of it. We lived in Akron Ohio, and got quite a bit of snow and salt on the streets. I remember in the winter after the snow would melt and it was still cold, he'd say "come on Dave, let's go wash all this crap off the car and get a pizza". We'd order a pizza from Rizzo's pizza and tell them we'd be there in 30 minutes. We'd go to the "quarter" car wash and I'd sit in the car while he sprayed all the salt off...he'd spray against my window and make me laugh. Then we'd drive over to the pizza place and I'd get to ride home with that warm pizza sitting on my thighs.

I remember that like it was yesterday. Such a small thing, but spending time with dad was great.

What's your story?

i have limited memories of my father.. he passed when i was 11. And before that, a career Army man always overseas. But i do have memories of when he took the family to Ethiopia for a tour of duty. I was around 4 or 5. I wish to this day i knew him better. Which is why i dedicated my ceremony in his honor..

What's your story?
Not all that different really.

Dad had a 1970 Torino Cobra in Calypso Coral (Red/Orange) 428 SCJ Drag Pack. Thing would pass everything except a gas station. Used to spend the weekends helping him clean it up, learning how everything under the hood worked, and how/why to upgrade various items.

Used to sit in dad's lap and while he operated the gas/clutch and steering I'd slam through the gears.

It is my fondest and most hated of memories.

That car was supposed to be mine should I finish high school and go on to college. As a "lesson" he sold it just before I started my senior year in high school. Pissed me off at the time, but also taught a valuable lesson. Don't "expect" handouts, no matter who promisses them to you. Find your own way.

My dad was (and still is) very good at teaching the "hard" lessons of life.

I remember those winters very well. You grew up close to where I grew up.

I remember my dad taking me and my brother fishing at one of his favorite spots in around Kent. He rented a row boat and the three of us headed out to the middle of the lake. One time, my brother casted his line out and the hook caught me in the cheek, that hurt. My dad took a pair of pliers out of the tackle box and pulled the hook out. It hurt worse coming out than it did going in. From then on, I sat at the other end of the boat away from my brother. Then my dad would bring home a bucket of fish for my mom to clean while he went to take a nap.

Unbelievable Dave! My Grandpa John had a 1970 LeMans in Gold and pampered it until the day he traded it in on a 1979 FIREBIRD. He was the coolest Grandpa. I miss him.

...And we both have Alloy cars. What are the odds? Two Alloy Shelby's, Two 1970 LeMans, Two Families.

I was either 9 or 10 at the time. My mom had recently married my step-dad after being widowed a few years earlier.

Mom was horrible at picking out mechanical things. Example: our lawn mower and snow blower were both POS Sunbeam models. Before she re-married, when I was "the man of the house", I was tasked with doing the outdoor tasks - mowing the lawn, snow blowing etc. Those crappy Sunbeams broke down all the time. I actually remember trying to mow as it was getting dark one night - my mom was holding the flashlight so I could see. The d*mn mower broke down (as it always did), so my grandma got the kitchen scissors and started cutting the lawn by hand. We were lucky that the neighbors were so nice to us that they felt pity and helped finish the lawn.

Anyway... Mom had bought a crappy car before getting married to step-dad, and yes, it was a POS too.

Introducing the AMC Hornet stationwagon in brown, with wood siding. Just like this...

Well, Dad never liked the car, but drove it begrudgingly until one day.

We were heading to my soccer practice on Saturday morning - late as always.

At the stop light the car died - as it frequently did. Dad got it re-started, but as we went through the very busy intersection... it died again.

Oh man. I think I learned all the swear words that I'd ever need to know during the next 1/2 hour.

I remember learning for the first time what a carburetor was... and that, from Dad's point-of-view, AMC made the worst one around.

I remember trying to push the car in my soccer shoes through the intersection.

I also remember that soon after we no longer had the Brown Hornet... aka the Sh*t-mobile.

I think my hatred of AMC (and Chrysler because they bought AMC) began that day.

Happy Fathers day to all the dads.

I can't wait for Midnight CST. I'll be calling my dad to harass him and then wish him for fathers day. It is holidays like this, that I miss my parents a lot more than normal.

I'm sure I can blame my unhealthy car obsession on daddy. I'm more than sure he accepts full responsibility with pride. I'm trying to coax him into visiting me in October for the huge "Cruisin' the coast" even in Mississippi. Last year, I attended and called him while I was driving. The only thing he could say was; "Heidi, You suck."

Even though my dad is a true blue Chevrolet man, I love him with all my heart.
