The internals of this engine are a bit different than most automotive engines.
The top of the connecting rod is not attached directly to the piston. The top of the connecting rod attaches to a "crosshead" which rides in guide channels. A long piston rod then connects the crosshead to the piston.

Installing the "thin-shell" bearings. Crank & rod journals are 38" in diameter and 16" wide:








A piston & piston rod assembly. The piston is at the top. The large square plate at the bottom is where the whole assembly attaches to the crosshead:

The "spikes" on the piston rods are hollow tubes that go into the holes you can see on the bottom of the pistons (left picture) and inject oil into the inside of the piston which keeps the top of the piston from overheating. Some high-performance auto engines have a similar feature where an oil squirter nozzle squirts oil onto the bottom of the piston.

The cylinder deck (10 cylinder version). Cylinder liners are die-cast ductile cast iron. Look at the size of those head studs!:

I'd hate to do an oil change on that thing.

Can't see most of the pics.

However, .278 BSFC is really efficient. When I was running testing we were up around .340 at torque peak, running 11 liter engines at 1200 RPM and 1200 lb*ft of torque. Of course that was 12 years ago.

Yeah, it's extremely efficient!

Too bad the pics disappeared. They were there when I previewed it ...weird. Was from an e-mil so I pasted it directly ...that probably mesed something up.

The pics show guys crawling around installing bearings the size of Clidesdale saddles and piston rods (as they call them) that look to be 10' tall.

The pistons use a piston rod that pushes straight down to a crosshead that connects to what we'd consider to be a conecting rod that's crank-mounted.

Five million+ ft-lbs Tq @ 110 rpm -- you can almost count the flywheel teeth as they rotate by

Now, this one's no joke...

For WWII the US government wanted big powerful V8s for the Sherman tanks. Ford had a 1,650 CID DOHC 4V 60* V12 (yep, back in the 40s!!!) so redesigned it to lop off 4-cylinders.

The result is below (60* [not 90*] DOHC 4V gas V8!) and, of course, a noble 'stanger just had to put one in his '70 mustang! 1100 CID and good breathing!

So, contrary to what many folks say about Ford's seemingly 'new-found' love of DOHC 4Vs, Ford's proficiency with them goes back well over 65 years now!

I bet it makes some BIG TORQUE too! Gotta love it! ;-)

Getting weight transfer on launch could be a problem for sure. It does look like an alloy block but that could just be paint since not much point in saving weight in a tank. I couldn't find any updates online on how the build worked out.
