Looking to buy a new Digital Camera

I'm in the market for a new Digital Camera. Will be used mostly for taking pictures of my car and other cars at show. What do you guys recommend? I want something nice, but not too pricey.

Check out this site first for your research, it is one of the few completely independent photographic gear review sites. Stay away from ad fueled review sites like CNET.

A couple ideas for you.

1) Talk to Shelbyfestguy (Kyle). He enjoys photography and may have some good pointers for you.

2) I bought a Canon S5 about 1.5 years ago. I like it pretty well, but it's definitely not an SLR. What I found during my shopping is....

* If you want the best photos, go SLR ...and spend $1,000 (yes, you can get them less expensive, but by the time you buy a case, a lens, a storage card, etc...you'll be up there)

* If you want something decent, get one similar to my S5, they are about $500 or so once you get a few small accessories with them.
PowerShot S5 IS Digital Camera

* If you want something you can carry in your pocket, then look at the smaller point and shoots...decent pics for about $200

Consider what you'll use it for. For example, will you take any pics from long distance? If so, you'll want a high zoom level. If you plan to take videos, find out the camera's capabilities. The one weakness I've found with my S5 is the ability to take extremely close macro photos....it's not very good.

All of my shots (except for the crappy cell phone pictures - some more coming tonight - are taken with a DSLR. My Nikon D700 is the best camera I've ever owned, second place still belongs to my Nikon F2. They are equivalent with the best film I ever had available, and my laptop is now my darkroom [I still have to learn to do on Photoshop the stuff I used to do in the darkroom].

Find one you like and then read their reviews. The have comparisons th the equivalent technology.

If you are looking for a DSLR and don't have any lenses to preserve you can't go wrong with either Nikon or Canon. It is all a matter of whose lens technology you either have or like.

All of my pictures this weekend from the Shelby American Collection shoot were taken with my D700 (new camera) and my old 35-105 Micro Nikkor lens (about 20 years old). I much prefer it for close in work.

And my old 43-86 is the best portrait lens ever.

+1 Dave and I did this research together a year or so ago, and we both bought the same camera. My fiancé uses ours and she loves it. SLR cameras are a big larger framed, cost more, and do require a little more work to get your shots. The SI5 is great at point and shoot, although allows you to tinker with a lot of the same setting you would expect to find on a SLR. Anything less is point and shoot. Today's camera are all pretty comparable and within a price range are all about the same, to the average picture taker. I would go with decent storage, 5-8meg, and stick with a name brand like Cannon, Nikon, and such. Stay away from the Sony line unless you like to be brand loyal as everything you want or need then has to come from Sony, and they like to rape you on everything. The others use industry standard stuff like storage cards, chargers, battery... etc.

If you are just looking to take pictures at car shows and such, do your research with the above links that were provided then go to E-Bay and see if you can pick one up for alot less. I did that with a Fuji Finepix S7000 and picked it up for $260. This camera was worth or $1,000 brand new and was also rated as one of the top camera's at that time. It does take some really nice pictures. Also make sure you get a good UV filter for outdoor use. That really helps make the colors jump out at you when it is adjusted right.

I use a Blackberry phone and you've all witness the absolute clarity and quality of my photos.

I'm not divulging any more secrets.
