Great, a black box. Now Big Brother can give you a ticket without pulling you over, assuming that he can access the data remotely.

I think that the black box is already in our cars. It is however this is the first time that they are telling us about it. Dont worry the information is the property of the owner and the information in said device belongs to the owner
so no one can access it without permission. However if you are in a rental that is another story. I am sure that these will be in all cars not just the 500. The dealership will also have access to the information in there that could be a problem unless you tell then to stay out of you're box.

George thanks for posting...I had seen the order guide, which shows some of the same info.
I too want to know more about the black box. Who owns the info? Who can access it? and does it require owner's consent? Can it be deactivated? Do other Ford products have it, or just Mustang/GT500? Will it reduce insurance costs? I want to understand why this has been added.

I don't think that is correct. This technology has been used in the equipment business for several years now. It is often used to determine if the machine has been abused, or serviced properly. The information can be used to determine if warranty work will be covered. HSURB® |

So the 2010 GT500 gets the 3.55 axle and I also read somewhere it will also come with the KR cold air and program......

The old one could not be accessed by the dealer ...only a Ford rep and only if warranty fraud was suspected. Also, the data could be subpoened by law enforcement under certain circumstances. I beleive it only held data on the prior 2 seconds of operation. In NY state there have been lawsuits over blackboxes on other vehicles and the ability of law inforcement to use it against you. If you wer not informed your vehicle had one you had more rights than if you were informed. If you were informed you had some rights to request it being disabled and though it would not be disables, it gave you some additional rights to block the data being used against you. I suspect this is a much more capable recorder. It will be interesting to see how it will be used, both by Ford's intent, law-enforecment, etc. I think in the future all vehicles will have them and not clear to me what rights to the data we actually may have. It is very Big Brother tho. Some insurance companies (like Progressive) offer to install a BB for free in return for lower rates (at least in NV, prolly elsewhere too). But that data can used against you (lots of fine print, I'm told). Scary!

I did some quick research on the "black boxes" and it looks like they are required by the NHTSA beginning in 2010. I don't think I will be buying any more new cars.
From what I understand it pretty much takes a court order to get into the black box, even for insurance purposes. It looks like they can access the PCM data on Mustangs prior to the 2010 MY. I do not know what kind of storage capacity it has, but it seems to be a short timeframe, like a couple of minutes at most. The data is used to corroberate the findings of accident investigators as far as I can tell. Here is a link to a company that accesses the black boxes for insurance companies. It has a lot of usefull info. Crash Data Recorders

![]() If cars come with an internal bluetooth device, like a cell phone, I wonder if in the future they'll record whether that was being used just prior to the accident also. ![]() I'm all for public safety...but I'm not confident this data will be used in the best ways for society. Dave
