Overview pdf Nice to see this sale/use of the facility, especially since it will absorb many displaced engineering jobs in the area.

I did notice this in the Ford announcement (pdf file): Production of energy storage and creating more than 4,000 direct jobssolar power systems to begin in 2011, I went to Clairvoyant's website but can't find anything on energy *storage* which has to be batteries of some sort and which might be very interesting if it was a new/improved Lithium-ion-like tech that might benefit Ford in with big push into Electrics that they're gearing up for ...but nada on the Clairvoyant site. Then I found this at XtremePower:
Could Ford be grooming their battery technology supplier for their car electrification program right in their own backyard?  Smith Electric Vehicles (UK) will be doing Ford pre-production electrification uplifts but I've not been able to find any association betw Smith and XtremePower/Powercell (norany other battery supplier). Just looking for where the breadcrumbs cross -lol. Then I found this (in the documentation from the 2009 Green Car Congress that Ford presented it's electrification plans at). While lithium ion battery maker, Valence Technologyhas had a relationship with Smith Electric Vehicles since 2005 and were pursuing contracts with the newly-created Smith Electric Vehicles US Corp (SEV-US), we thought they might seem the logical choice of supplier for the American venture. We thought wrong. It has been announced that Kokam America will be the "partner of choice" for Smith Electric Vehicles US. With a strong market presence in the U.S. for the past 8 years, Kokam is a partner in the KD Advanced Battery Group LLC who are building a new battery manufacturing facility in Michigan. The Kokam battery in question is a large format primatic lithium ion polymer affair with a notable energy density of about 180 Wh/kg. A robust cycle life, it can be completely charged and discharged over 1,500 times before dipping below 80 percent of original energy capacity. Of course, when it comes to batteries, price is one of the most important factors and Kokam America is truly competitive here. Their CEO, Don Nissanka, says their cells are currently in the $750/kWh range and they expect to significantly improve on that point, he says, "Going into the auto industry, we have to keep below $0.50/Wh [$500/kWh] and we believe we can get there." We expect that if they do, they should have no shortage of customers in the future. So, Kokam is supplying Smith in the UK and KD Advanced Battery has some relevance to a new plant in Michigan. Further, KD is a joint venture between Dow Chemical and Kokam America and they have a grant to work on both lithium and dry manganese-graphite bateries in MIdland MI: • Midland -- $161 million for KD Advanced Battery Group, a joint venture of The Dow Chemical Co., Kokam America, Inc. and Townsend Ventures LLC, to produce batteries (manganese oxide cathode/graphite lithium-ion) for hybrid and electric vehicles. Interesting, since Johnson controls (who, as I understand it, will be the control-systems integrator for Ford on the production electrification program) and Grand Rapids Press carried this story on their Holland battery venture. In that story, they state that Johnson Controlls and Saft Advanced Power Solutions were the big winners and that Ford is one of the first two companies to benefit from that: Once JCI-Saft gets the grant money, combined with $148.5 million in incentives already awarded by the state, the project will unfold quickly. "Almost immediately, there will be some construction jobs," Timm said. The brick warehouse will be retrofitted with a "plant within a plant," to provide the dry room needed for lithium-ion battery production. The $299 million U.S. Department of Energy grant, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, was "absolutely significant," Timm said. "It really will enable us to take our next generation battery industry, and commercialize it," he said. "It gives it the jump start we've all been looking for." Two companies are the first customers lined up for the Holland battery output. Ford Motor Co. expects to use the JCI-Saft batteries in a future plug-in hybrid vehicle. Azure Dynamics, a company that retro-fits gas-powered commercial vehicles with hybrid engines, also plans to use batteries made here. So, it appears Ford has hooked up with a new dry battery technology that is somewhat of a breakthru tech. Stable, high power-density, aggressive cost targets, etc! Bingo! And, just in case this tie-in might seem too contrived, the other beneficiary cited, Azure Dynamics, is who has been contracted to Ford dealers who have been carrying Azure's Balance Hybrid Electric commercial truck for some time now and which is a perfectly compatible commercial application for the new battery tech that Ford and them will be receiving. Ford has hinted recently at a 200 mile range plug-electric (today 60-80 is about the practical limit for a 'real' car) and this may just be the battery tech that will do it!  Ok, ok, I never proved that any of it will be manufactured at the Wixom plant but with the tie-ins w/ JCI and the trail of bread crumbs it sure would be a good place once volume ramps up and shipping heavy batteries from Holland starts getting too expensive for a production program.
