Btw, did you notice in the Focus RS article that it has sprayed-liners? I thought the 1.4L I4 was the first and only production spray-bore Ford but apparently the Focus RS has it!

Pretty close. Twin Wasp 2800. 2000 hp, a little more with water injection for emergency boost. Radial engines were quite a bit more reliable than the liquid cooled Merlins/Packards primarily due to the fact that they were air cooled. What they gave up in aerodynamic efficiency, they made up for with ruggedness. This was the primary reason that the Navy preferred radials over liquid cooled. It was not uncommon for a radial engined plane to survive several cylinders being shot out during combat. The liquid cooled engines main Achiles heel is their cooling system. A small leak in the cooling system is bad news for the engine.

While the Corsair was made by the Chance Vought Company, mainly up in Conneticut, Northrop Grumman did own the Vought company for a while until 2000 when we sold it to the Carlisle group.

The Corsair was mainly made by Chance Vought & Goodyear, but Brewster Aircraft made some during WWII. I believe that the Corsair was the longest produced piston engined fighter in the world, 1940-1950s. It was also the first piston engined fighter to fly faster than 400 mph. The last Corsairs to see combat were in 1969 between El Salvador & Hoduras, called the Soccer War. Both air forces flew Corsairs at the time.

For the most part, WWII planes that we're specifically built for a certain role or adversary, like F6F Hellcat (built specifically to fight the A6M Zero), tended to have a very short career. The Corsair & the Mustang were designed to broader specs (jacks of all trades, masters of none). There were better dog fighters, better attack planes, but like today's war planes, they were expected to do what ever they were asked to do.
