Great story from T.S- dedication and love

We were at the Shelby Headquarters last Monday during our trip to Las Vegas. It was my first trip to the Facility, and having owned a 1966 GT350, and now my 08 GT 500 Vert', I was pretty stoked to be doing the brief tour, and seeing the Museum. After leaving a small fortune in the gift shop and getting one more final look around, we went out front to get a picture in front of the entrance, then we were thinking about going over to the speedway for a tour that they do hourly.

Deciding that there wasn't much there to see that we hadn't seen before, we opted to go over the the Shelby Corner Café. I had always wanted to try some of Mr. Shelby's Chili, and what a better place to do it but in HIS Café.

We went inside, and right away felt at home with the decor, hoods from Mustangs, Shelby cars place mats, Cobra Valve cover light fixtures, and all kinds of fun memorabilia to look at.

We had our lunch, I got my bowl of Chili, and we were out the door, ready to head back to the Belagio, and lose some more $$.

As I walked out to the POS rental car I was driving, I didn't think twice about the silver Ford mini-van parked in the HC spot next to us. We were too busy yaking, and talking about the day to really pay any attention to it to it.

As I got in the car, and started the engine, the passenger door opens, and as my jaw dropped open and hit the steering wheel, that was when my afternoon took a left turn! I was suddenly eye to eye with Carroll Shelby! I stammered and had to do a double take, and I start yipping like a school kid that had just seen his favorite Sports Hero to my wife....."That was Carroll Shelby.....holy $hit, I wonder if I could get a picture with him?"

We followed him and the woman who was with him inside, and by the time we hit the door to the Café, and went in, he was no where to be found. I noticed a door on the wall facing the front door was open, and it led to a conference/banquet room. The room had huge windows, and it was obvious that he and his guest were in the room.

We VERY politely stuck our heads(my head)and asked if it would be possible to get a picture with Mr. Shelby? That was when the woman with him starts yelling at us to get out, and leave him alone! I immediately apologized and began my retreat, when Carroll stood up, invited us in, and said "I love to have my picture taken, come on in."

I was so flustered by what had just happened that I blubbered out a few thank your's for giving us such awesome cars to own, or something to that extent. My wife snapped the picture, his companion snapped at us one more time to "GET OUT and let him have his lunch", and after shaking this living legends hand, & thanking him an additional time, we were on our way with our tails between our legs!

If I look unhappy in the picture, just re-read what lead up to this moment.....you would probably have the same look on your face.

Looking back, it was an opportunity that I truly never thought would happen, I was lucky enough to meet Carroll Shelby, shake his hand, and have a picture with him that will last the rest of my life. In hind sight, I guess I would have done it again........who among us wouldn't have? Sometimes we act without thinking about how it will effect others, human nature I guess......


I will be sending a letter to Carroll, and a $500.00 donation to the Children's Fund, with my apology, and gratitude for him being willing to make the time out of his day to meet me!

Get screamed at and treated like shit, yet "YOU" aplogise? WTF, like Michael Anthony from Van Halen said at Barrett Jackson......, "Of course I'll take a pic, it part of the gig. I wouldn't be who I am without you guys".

Carroll's handlers need to learn a thing or 2 about how to treat people. Being famous is one thing, but he would not be who he is without his customers and fans.

I think it was impolite to stick your head in the door, no matter how "politely" you did it. Having said that, her behavior was inexcusable. I wonder how long it will take that company to go belly up after CS is gone.

Famous people are nothing more than famous "people". Fun to meet them, but many famous folks and those that travel with them ruin their star power with crap like that. I would ROFL if someone wanted to take a photo with me becasue they were proud to own a product I designed. How cool would that be? It'll never happen for me, but you get my point.

I grew up around so may famous folks in Rye, (Westchester County) New York. My patience for their BS was gone before I was 12. THey can all pound sand.
