NASCAR Nationwide series /Mustang

NASCAR is planning to use the Mustang, Camaro, Challenger body styles for the next Car of Tomarrow in the NationWide series.

Since Toyota doesn't have a "pony car" they will use the Camry ....how lame...
"NASCAR was looking for a pony car, or a car that's different than what we have on the Cup Series," said Laerte Zatta, Toyota program manager for the Craftsman Truck and Nationwide series. " But we don't have a model that is very different. The Camry, Corolla and Avalon are very similar in design, so we decided to just go with the Camry."

These cars will obviously be nothing like their name sake's but instead will be a purpose built tube chassis car with old fashioned pushrod engines like they have now.

If NASCAR thinks this will get more fans to watch they are only fooling themselves.

Now a real old fashioned "TransAM car for example a Mustang with a fuel injected double overhead cam engine (Man Racer type) 6 speed man trans that's another story......now you would have my attention.

Camry? What crap, maybe they should call it a Camallengerstangro. Since they copy everything else.

They also would seem to get an automatic advantage right from the start because they don't have to redevelop any aero considerations since the shapes are identical. Then again, maybe roush will just be painting a Mustang on the current CF bodies? Can't tall from the article.

I recall that when Jack Roush was asked some year+ ago how he would approach a NASCAR TransAm not using factory bodies and, if I recall, he said exactly what they're doing: use the N-1 cup cars and paint 'em up like pony cars because that was the most effective use of already sunk investment...

...but otherwise that sucks. :sHa_dielaughing2:

So what do you think the cars would look like? NASCAR will come out with their own body like they always do and the owners will just have to put the faux stickers on them. It would be nice to have each manufacturer come up with their own bodies like they did in the old days but then it will be back to finger pointing at who has the best aero-dynamics for their car. I think they called this back to the future.

I think they'll look like the N-1 Bush cars repainted into pony cars and the Bush cars will use the N-1 cup cars that the COTs replaced. That way the only real investment is paint Ya gotta love (hate;-) NASCAR. Those CF bodies are like 40-50K a pop so they won't want to waste them ...sad but likely, I think.

I think 'camry' is Japanese for horse manure, so I guess that's how it qualifies as a pony car.

I think if Toyota can not come up with a comparable car, then they need to be disqualified from the Nationwide series period. If you make one exception for them, you need to do it for the others.

Nascar has done nothing but make exceptions for Toyota. Like their pushrod V-8 that they never manufacturered.:BigBoss2:

Yeah, and with the cam sitting up high so the pushrods are short so they can rev higher -- NASCAR finally adjusted their setup to take away the unfair advantage.

Actually I'd be for swapping out the dino engines for the modern ones... Yates Racing says the modular is up to the task right now based on testing they did.

Maybe it's just as well -- NASCAR is a dino too
