Pic's of my Cracked Valve Stems :(

Well I got the letter today about the cracking valve stems on all the 2007 Mustangs and some of the 2008’s.

I took a look at my Valve stems with a flash light and all 4 of them have a bunch of cracks around the base of the valve stem. Take a flash light and bend yours back to take a look.

Just what I want to do……have my dealer pull all my tires. Crap !!!!

The valve stems are made in China.

I got the letter too - I will have it posted when I get time. I made it to the office today but never got it into the computer. I have not looked at mine as no longer stock tires on the care - they are in the basement though wouldn't it be fun to make them change the tires just to have them sit on the floor

If they do it right they shouldn't have to take the tires off, they should be able to break the bead just enough to change the valve stem without dismounting the tire. So no rebalancing is needed also.

I'm going to babysit this operation.

No power lug wrenches will be used on my rims.

I will have to show them how to jack it up too.

Oh..... your worried about that part of the surgery! Don't blame ya! Those tin covered lug nuts are pretty easy to damage

When tire jockys use the air gun with the big lug on it....they will scar up the edges of the rim in a hearbeat and screw up the lug nuts. It's pretty much a sure screw up unless you voice your concern up front and show them your nice rims before they start so when it happens they can buy you brand new ones.

When I took mine in to get the oil changed last fall I babysat them with everything. Luckily I brought my own oil and filter - the supposed "expert" on staff who was working on my car was reaching for the bulk gun of the 5w20 before I grabbed it from him.

Then the second "expert" was ready to jack the car up from the wrong area (one was from one of the front suspension pieces ).

Then he grabs the air gun like he was on Andretti's pit crew at Indy ready to take off the tires before I grabbed that and told him to use the regular wrench. After arguing with me for 2 minutes I showed him where the gun was going to gouge the rim around the lug nuts. Then I physically had to get a torque wrench so that he'd tighten them to spec (he said "I've done this enough... I know what's right.") He was way lose on 1/2 and overtorqued on the rest.


I trust no one unless I stand next to them. Some of these guys give me the creeps that they're allowed to work on ANY car!

I just realized I have a 2007 Ford Escape that has the problem too.

Even better yet just bring the wheels to them if you can and avoid the stress all together, that's what I usally do.

Seems that Ford has known about this since Nov. of 2008.

Good info Grabby!

I remember reading about this last year but I thought at the time they said it didn't apply to the GT500 ,...guess they were wrong.

Glad I changed to the new wheels and tires including new valve stems....just hope they didn't come from China too.
