This is so cool! You gotta love Ford's sense of tradition!
E85 Powered FR500S Mustang Attempts 250 MPH at Bonneville Salt Flats Speedway -- driven by Danny Thompson (sone of Mickey Thompson some 40 years after his dad's records in the Mach-1.
"During the week of August 19-22, a team of thrill seekers ventured out to the Bonneville Salt Flats Speedway to break a land speed record. Forty years after Mickey Thompson set nearly 300 speed and endurance records in a 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 to support Ford Division's launch of that now-famous model, Danny Thompson, Mickey's son, was set to repeat history in a 2008 E85 powered FR500C Ford Mustang. The FR500C was equipped with a 5.4L Ford GT block, heads and various performance parts from Ford Racing." ...more

E85 thru 160# injectors -- ummm, cool! Huge Whipple twin-screw -- cool! Funny-looking piece of sheet steel welded to tower brace 1/4" over the Whipple valley -- curious! Blue metalic still the fastest color for 40 years -- priceless! ;-)

I've hesitated posting this but must share it with "the family."
When I moved upstate from NYC in 1974, Danny Thompson was moonlighting summers for Mayflower movers. He was on the team that packed my appartment in NY. What a nice guy!! When he saw my Intermecchanica Italia 302 in the garage we started talking cars and mentioned he was Micky Thompson's son -- at first I thought he was kidding me! I gave him the custom-made oak case my Italia windshield replacement shipped from Turin Italy in -- it cost more than the windshield (long story). He gave me an open invitation to come out to the family ranch (somewhere out west in God's country) for a week and meet his dad and see the 'toys,' which I never took him up on because work was relentless at the time, but did consider making contact some months after I moved -- never did tho. That was many years before his dad and mom were murdered outside their LA-area home in 1988(?) by two gunmen at the direction of Michael Goodwin, an associate of Thompson. I only found out recently that Danny fought all that time until he was able to get Goodwin finally convicted some 18 years later. Goodwin apparently hired two guys to gun them down -- they fled on bicycles -- bizarre! Goodwin later tried to pin financial misdoings on Danny and Mickey's sister (can't remember her name) in retaliation. I believe those charges were dropped and I believe Goodwin is still serving a double-life sentence. Apparently he underestimated the resolve of family. I'm figuring he was a few years younger than me at the time so must be 57 or so now? How cool of Ford to get him to drive this car 40 years later!!! Gotta love how Ford treats their family.

Wow Dan great story , small world isn't it ? You should try to get in contact with him just to say hello and that you have read about his new endeavors. Never know he may remember those days and invite you out again.
...and yes it would seem that Ford doesn't forget "Family".
