Great technology. I've seen some pretty interesting things at my company, like extrude honing and plasma arc cutting of the fuel injector spray holes. Those holes are about the size of a human hair and they accurately cut them by using an electric arc to burn them...wow.
I also had an engineer once hand me a fuel injector plunger that was coated with titanium nitride. The plunger is "match fit" into a bore with a tolerance in just a few millionths of an inch. So the tiniest burr on them meant they would not slide together. He gave me a standard pair of pliers and said "here, see if you can scratch this plunger up". I cranked as hard as I could on the plunger for 15 seconds, then he took it and slid it right into the injector hole...I had not put even the tiniest scratch on it...that stuff is really HARD.

The last word I got from an inside source was that Ford was likely to make the 2011 GT500 aluminum block using "spray bore" technology. Most all the rest of the engine will use the current GT500 parts.

I believe one online source quoted a Ford AU exec as saying the 5.0 Coyote will get this treatment too. Sure sounds like Ford plans to roll this out broadly and rapidly -- outstanding.
And kudos to Ford on not only keeping their patent portfolio growing, but topping all auto mfgrs in new patents and having their patent portfolio ranked #1 in the industry ...no mean feat in a 'compressing' industry and down economic times. This National Invention of the Year award is nice icing on the cake -- maybe they can get some good advertising attention out of it when in production.

The reason I asked is that we sputter coat our rock samples with a few atoms thick coating of gold to prep them for scanning electron microscope analysis. It is done in a vacuum to help ensure an even coating and I believe it helps in the plasma generation.
