If you leave the AC on (normally the compressor shuts off at WOT), the compressor's energy overhead soon outweighs the benefit after the small thermal buffer is depleted and if you turn the compressor off, you suck-out all the cold very rapidly (at 6000 rpm an SC engine is flowing serious amounts of air). They looked at thermal-buffering (chilled tank that could be pre-cooled via AC) that might be a large enough thermal buffer to get you through a good quarter-mile (with compressor off) but decided it just wasn't worth the expense/complexity.

I beleive this was back when John Coletti was Mr SVT and the Termies alrady out and the GT500 was in early planning. Read about this project somewhere back then but dunno where.
You are correct Dan it was when the first GenII Lightning came out that they almost brought this to market but as with every other product it had to go through Ford management so it was canned. I believe they may have a patent on this but not sure . Maybe if you did some digging you could find something.

Here's Ford 2003 media release (document archives) on the gen-III Lightning concept ....NAIAS 2003 ...SuperCooler patents! That's pretty slick hood-intake

If I remember correctly, the new F-150 put on about 800# which nixed the lightning when Dodge did decided to stuff the Viper V10 in the [still-prior-gen and fairly light] RAM and call it an SRT10.

Here's more in PickupTrucks.com with some great pics (on page 2-of-3).

A guy on an F150 blog says Coletti owned the patents and when he left so did any chance of Ford doing the Supercooler (I doubt that, but...).

Then there's this company -- Supercooler! ...who claim to have 2 patents (on what I can't tell) ...can't even tell exactly what they make but it sure seems to improve mileage (my friend Tom would like that -lol- [inside joke]).

Btw, I did find many of the Ford patents on the spray-bore tech (some date back to 2002) but couldn't find anything on SuperCooler-related tech.

That's it Dan I knew you could find it! Good find ,too bad Ford made the F-150 so much bigger and heavier that they had to scrap the 2004 Lightning. That thing looked fantastic.
I could see this system working on the GT500 very nicely though....
