Default differential bearing question

..I was down at my ford dealer talking to my mechanic and the service manager about shelbyfest, and they mentioned they had just put 373s into a local gt500 owner's car.......they also said to be on the safe side they got a pinion bearing in case they screwed up the old one, and showed it to me (didn't have to use it) they said it was the one specific to the gt500 and the bullit, which sounded right to me.

then they threw me for a loop; they said the one they took off the old set of gt500 gears looked different than the new one they got as a possible replacement.....does anyone here know why there might be a difference between the one that came on his car (2009) and the replacement bearing from ford? I am getting ready to do this myself later in the year, and want to have everything pinned down...

It is a good idea to have a replacement when you change your gears. If you have a good bearing press you stand less of a chance of damaging the cage when you pull the old one off.
the bearing in the GT500 is a hight torque bearing
the proper kit PN is M4210B1. Ford just started carrying the bearing separatly, I cant find the PN, I will look for it
they may look a bit different based on the manufacture as long as the specs are the same

I think what he means is that the one he saw stock looked different than the part in the Ford parts box, but both are supposed to be from Timken?

+1 I even saw the part # on the package, and while I did not write it down, I think it was the same as has been posted elsewhere for the proper replacement.

I'll defer this one to Speedracer....IMO it should look the same, perhaps they have the earlier regular GT bearing they were using until the correct one became available.

Oh I see
I agree , they did not look different. There was not any part markings on the original bearing removed, the replacement had the Mfg and P/N, I didn't make note of it.

TG is correct, with the bearing--nothing has changed. On the original bearings Ford didn't want the p/ns known so Timken did not put them on the bearings. Once FRRP decided to sell them we started putting the p/n on the bearing.

Head Bearing (unique GT500 Part) P/Ns cup & cone: NP159221 & NP254157

Tail Bearing (Common with Mustang GT) P/Ns cup & cone: M88048 & M88010

..thanks for the input, but I guess that still leaves my dealer with a mystery of why the bearing they were sent is different from the one on the car.....oh well, at least they were able to reuse the one on the car.

I will probably get one just in case with the plan of returning it since likely won't need it....which likely doesn't help you much.
