Default FRPP Short Throw Shifter

I read all the threads and posts, before posting this. I am possibly getting the Tran/clutch TSB done soon and was thinking of having them install the FRPP/KR short throw shifter in while it was in the air. Problem is, I still don't get it. Not to sound ignorant, but what will this improve? Just the travel distance? I did not think it was bad on the stock shifter. I seen someone posted pictures of the stock and FRPP side by side and other than the neck being different length (near shifter) they look the exact same.

So, as I like to be educated by this bunch, I also want to know if it was worth the cost and effort to install. Is this more a racing need, or for drag? Or does this improve the trans shift-ability? Or is is ALL about the travel distance and mainly that? I can shift the car (at the knob) with very little effort now, so thus the question.

Would like to hear the opinions, and positives and negatives!

Thanks in advance...

My TSB starts tomorrow and my shifter should show up tomorrow as well. Went with the FRPP one over the Shelby one for 2 reasons............cost and the fact that someone close to SAI told me they think the FRPP one is superior. My dealer is installing for free since they'll already have the whole thing opened up for the TSB. Joe got me a good deal on it. Good thing with the FRPP one is your stock stick/knob will continue to work on it (you don't NEED to get the FRPP ball.............although I will since it looks so much better IMO...........mine will be the black one). From all I've read, the throws are shorter/crisper definite difference in feel. It's a no-brainer when you're doing the TSB if they'll install for free.

Default Re: FRPP Short Throw Shifter

I switched when the KR short throw became available, I did it when my 500 was in the air already for the FRPP Shorty headers so the install cost was only 40 bucks!

The difference in the actual distance of the throws is marginal but noticeable and I like it. I also found it is just a more precise shifter, it is hard to explain, but it just feels better through the gears and you will notice it. My two cents.

Agree with all you state and I am already on it with Joe if I decide to go this route. I do like not having to change to the ball, just taste I guess. Thanks.

So I was correct in my visual that the throw can't really be that much, or very noticeable? Just feels better even though slight right? But on top of that you are saying it does improve the shift as well.

Arg... I hate mods like this, where you are trying to decide if it is mod fever or really makes enough a difference to do. The cost is minimal, but if you want to change it back it is a pain......

All good points, If the FRPP is anything like other short throw shifters it will also improve you shifts into 3rd gear and you will be less likely to miss shifts when hammering the gears. I went with the Steeda Tri-axe however the options today seem more plentiful, I changed mine when Steeda was just about the only company making a shifter for the GT500. I drove my friends GT with the FRPP shifter and it was very precise and had less damping than the Steeda. Both are bad ass. I was also looking for the classice Hurst shifter and que ball look.

Thanks Randy, that seems to be the commom theme, just did not fully understand what it brought to the table. I have to chuckle from time to time as when I seen the two (FRPP and Stock) side by side, and the difference is ever so slight, why Ford did not opt for the FRPP as stock! Just like the exhaust and a few other mods. I know for the 2010 the CAI and tune for the KR are stock, but you would think these simple small things should be as well.

So if I read all this, it is almost a must and more so if you are doing the TSB as it makes perfect sense and dollar for dollar yet another must have item that FORD should have done. So with me having the FRPP/KR exhaust, and CAI and tune, might as well add this and call it a KR LOL....

Dan,
Besides giving a bit shorter throw it will help to center the shifter and align it with 3rd and 4th gear (like SS said) This will help to reduce the chances of you missing 3rd when shifting from 2nd fast and hard or missing 4th gear when shifting out of 3rd or even down shifting from 5th to 4th.

The Steeda shifter accomplishes the same thing but is a bit more knotchy than the KR (FRPP) shifter.

Hope this helps

Yea that helps. I come to the realization that on top of the shorter travel it helps plug the gears better when you run through them fast on quick shifts. Once I get the ok from the dealer I will hit them up on installing this, and if ok, will give Joe a shout with my order!

Thanks all as always.

Default Re: FRPP Short Throw Shifter

I run the same as SS, and agree. Having driven it that way now for about two years, Birdman is right, its more knotchier than FRPP. Since i drive CH53's periodically for him now, and he's got the FRPP shifter, there is a big diff in them. His is a tighter shift, doesnt move around like Steeda's, and even the throws are sharper, shorter and better responsive. I like it better. I plan to change over.

If you have a good relationship with your dealer tech, ususally they install for free while tranny is out...mine did..

Well I can live without installing the rear gears and the carbon fiber and splitter as it will never make it back up my driveway without me tearing it off. LOL... So I can live without those and the wheels and pocket my 35K. LOL.

All in all, this will be the last mod for me pretty much.

Thanks!

Default Re: FRPP Short Throw Shifter

just had mine done for what its worth..had mine installed for free when my car was being fixed for body work.....I could honestly tell you that I was on the other side of the fence looking in... i could not justify spending $225 or whatever it was to get it.I felt like the stock shifter was enough..I even changed to the white ball and billet handle for the look and loved it..I felt like no way could the shifting be enough of an improvement for a non racing lamen as myself..HOWEVER...I found someone on the other site who sold it to me for $135 brand new shipped. so I jumped on it...all I can say is the day I picked up my car I was blown away....Seriously the shifts are allot more precise...the sloppiness (Not that there was allot) but its gone..the shifts are not really notchy but you know you are going gear to gear as opposed to before when going from 2 to 3rd was just a little slide to 5th...now its precise...you feel each gear and know you are shifting right...even if I had to pay the normal retail price this is a mod that I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND...I would do it again and probably would have been the first thing I would do next time...of all my mods its in the top 3.....Overall it trully gives me more of a feel like I am IN CONTROL of my shifting as opposed to my car controlling me... I would say go for it without hesitation....as far as the shorter throw...it claims 25% shorter throw...but when it is already pretty short its not THAT noticiable (Lets face it 25% of 10 is 2.5 25% of 5 is 1.25) so its there but to me if that was the selling point, I would pass....everything else everyone else said and hopefully I echoed is the real reasons for my supporting this mod.....GO FOR IT.....

No it doesn't. However, I did notice an improvement with no noticable noise while in 1st through 4th gear by changing the ball knob to the 2 inch knob made by Grabberpony. Although I can still hear the buzzing in 5th and 6th. Your results may vary.

Default Re: FRPP Short Throw Shifter

The addition of the Ford Racing shifter is one of my favorite mods. The shifts are now noticably shorter and more precise than stock. I highly recommend it, especially when you can have it installed for free.

If Ford installed the short-throw shifter as an OEM part, they wouldn't be making money selling it to you as an improved aftermarket part.
