Default Transmission Question revisited

Members,
Prior to the fatal crash, I posted a few questions about transmissions/clutches. My questions were prompted after reading of Ed's clutch failure getting of I-95. Since I can't find Ed's posting either, I am just asking for general info on the clutches and transmissions issue that may arise.

I do remember that the suspect components were installed prior to 18 August 2008. Ford has since issued a TSB and will/may reluctantly implement repairs. Basically, I asked about specific models affected. What I should look for in which models etc. and the rest of the why's and when's. I also remember that someone responded that noises and difficulty shifting may occur around the 9000 mile mark.
If any one remembers my original posting, please give me your inputs.
Being a future owner, I would just like to be as informed as possible.
Thanks
EP

Default Re: Transmission Question revisited

07-09 models built before 18Aug08 may exhibit symptoms at some point, depending on driving habits. Anything after that date, you should be golden. Basically the flywheel was the failing component, heating up and warping, causing the clutch to hang up and ultimately damaging the syncros in the tranny. They redesigned the flywheel, clutch, input shaft. If your looking at any vehicle before said date, get an oasis report on the car. It will tell you everything thats been done.
Dealers are another issue. Some are reluctant to do it. Most people usually find one that's performed said TSB before and are well versed on it. Having a good relationship with them helps. Making sure they have a senior SVT tech and tranny guru is key, plus all the required tools to do the job..hence a getting a dealer thats performed it before. Thats it in a nut shell...

Lots of infromation on the tranny in this thread:

http://www.stangmafia.com/forum/f61/...28-2008-a-593/

It's a long thread so you may have to sift through some posts to find the relevent ones. Find an 09 built after August 19, 2008 and you should be fine. However I have read of one person whose build date was Oct 2008 and is having the TSB done. You might also consider a 2010 model, which has a driver-friendlier clutch.

Gr8snkbite,
Thank you for the info. Very clear, concise and uncomplicated. Those are key factors that enabled me to understand the heart of the problems. I am a transmission/clutch technical novice as you have probably guessed.
Also your information helps me narrow my field of possible choices considerably.

I asked the guy in post #10 if he knew which flywheel he had.

"My research is proof to the pudding" What does this mean???
1) If he has the new flywheel why does he have the TSB trany problems?
2) Is it possible that a few old flywheels got used after they made the switch?

I doubt a few old flywheels got thrown into the mix.

Maybe his car's clutch was damaged when one of the truckers loaded it onto the transport truck. Some truckers really slip the GT500 clutchs to get the car up on the transport and then they take the car on and off 5 times to deliver other cars to other dealers.

Dunno...just a thought.

I'm glad you brought this up EP. I didn't realize my car may be affected too even though I am not showing the signs.

My car has 6000 miles on it. I'm not experiencing these symptoms but I'm cautious... Are all GT500's prior to 8/19/08 going to have this problem sooner or later?

hard to disengage, NO
hard to engage 1st and reverse, NO
hard to shift any gear, NO
gear grinding during shifts any gear, NO
vehicle creeps with trans in gear and clutch pedal fully depressed without brake pedal application, NO
clutch slippage in gear with clutch pedal released, NO
hiss noise with clutch pedal fully depressed, NO
(hiss on clutch pedal release is normal for GT500 clutch material). I do get comments at the track about this.

The date is not 8/8.

Cars built prior to 8/19/08 are prone to this problem.
