You can always swap out the knob on the FR handle. I know someone who has already done that with a custom Grabber Pony knob. The threads on the FR handle are 3/8" x 16 (The 16 is for TPI or threads per inch).

The stock handle threads are 12mm x 1.25 - so as long as the knob has the same thread it will fit. I believe you can purchase Grabber Pony's boot adapter and it will make the ball look okay with the stock handle.

So many choices with these knobs - just make sure you select the correct Shifter Brand "GT500 KR FR#DT-1425 (3/8 x 16)"

again....great write up....it took me all of 10 minutes for the install. it was easy. found I did not even need a pry bar for the shifter boot...came right off with my finger tips. anyways easy mod and to me worth it. For whatever reason the knob replacement makes the shifter feel firmer..not much flex as it had...when I looked at the original shifter handle, I noticed that the place where the 13mm bolts go through is rubber (I am sure to prevent noise) but I wonder if it also is what gave the shifter handle that little more of a looser feel when in gear (able to move shifter left and right pretty easily. with the solid steel handle it feels like it is ....solid...I like the look and feel of it for sure....thx again...

I'm glad to hear you got it installed successfully.

All that rubber around the base of the stock handle is to dampen noise, the downside is the mushy feeling you get when shifting.

I just complemented mine with the Ford Racing short-throw shifter. What a difference it makes. The shifts are shorter and crisper.

I purchased the shifter a while ago and just asked my dealer, who was doing the tranny TSB, if they would install it while the tranny was out - no problem; they just grab the FR shifter instead of the stock shifter while reassembling everything. It did not cost me anything. I brought a copy of the invoice for the shifter purchase and they entered the shifter install for my car's OASIS so it's covered under the FR warranty.

I replaced my stock shifter handle with a Ford Racing polished stainless steel handle with white ball knob PN M-7213-K. IMO, the white ball shift knob is a timeless classic. The handle/knob did not come with any instructions - so here is how I installed it.

I still have my stock shifter and just changed the stock handle and knob to the FRPP ball knob. The knob seems to sits back more while in 2nd, 4th and 6th gear. I always felt the stock knob was too vertical in those gears.

1. Pop off the bezel - it pops off really easy with a plastic prybar.

2. Unscew knob and remove boot/bezel, then pull the knob out of the boot.
The boot collar fits over a notch at the base of the knob. It may be easier to unscrew the knob if you start by pulling the boot collar down off the base off the knob allowing it to turn freely.

3. Remove stock handle bolts using a 13mm wrench. Suggest putting a towel around the console opening to keep from marring the edges in case the wrench slips.

Here's the FRPP handle next to the stock handle:

4. Remove the knob and jam nut from handle FRPP handle. Bolt on the FRPP handle to the shifter stub. The torque spec for these bolts is 26 lb-ft, but I torqued them somewhere between 22 and 25 lb-ft.
Update - a suggestion was made to apply some medium strength thread locker (blue loctite 242) on the bolt threads before installing due to vibration.

5. Insert the grommet on the handle and push it down to desired position. Install the boot/bezel over the handle but leave it loose for now. Pull the boot opening over the grommet such that it fits in the notch. Screw on the jam nut - with the hex nut side down. Then snap the bezel back in the console. Screw the jam nut all the way down, then screw on the ball knob. You'll have to play around with the knob and jam nut until the shift pattern lines up. Then tighten the jam nut against the ball with a 14mm wrench while holding the ball in the desired position.

And here it is complete - I love the look:
Again, great post.

Has anyone tried the Shelby Shifter? It is a forged part and surprisingly is a bit cheaper than the Ford Racing piece.

+1

I'm not too fond of the way that shifter handle looks - JMO. However, it may offer the advantage of being quieter than the FR handle.
