Emblems

Okay, so as a side benefit to my stupidity on Monday (The Garage Incident of 2009), I have met a cool local painter who may be painting my emblems to be stealthy black...............color matched to my car and cleared with a tinted clear. Since they have to re-shoot and clear my driver's fender, they had to take off the Cobra emblem on that side. He's going to paint that one up this afternoon for me so I can tack it up in place and see how I like it. If I don't like it, on will go the replacement one and I'll use the painted one in my collage (if I ever get around to doing it). If I like it, I plan on picking up a set of all emblems (two fender snakes, grille snake, S H E L B Y letters and faux gas cap) and having them all painted. I'll then reinstall all (with the letters being done by Farmdogs template). My hope is that it will make them all look like they are raised lettering. Not sure how it will look, but may be only one way to know. Should make the car faster since it will be even more black.

He also may paint/tint my rear lights (tails, 3rd and bumper), just not sure I'm ready to do it since once it's done, there's no going back to stock without buying new lights. All told, lights and emblems, will be done for 200 if I want them done.

first thing that came to mind was not good idea, paint will not adhere well enough to the plastic it will crack in a matter of weeks........

There's lots of painted plastic parts on these cars, so I'm not sure I agree with you there. I think it's in technique............I mean, he's not going to just spraypaint them. Lots of folks have the taillights tinted by applying a tinted clearcoat after proper prepping. They don't seem to crack, at least I haven't heard that being an issue, and they're plastic. I'm no automotive painter, but I'm assuming that the parts would be scuffed with a primer applied first and finish coat and clear applied following this. My main concern is if that will fill in all the detail on the pieces or not. I guess I'll see tonite. Hmmmm.....

I think there are to many grooved areas to get a good solid base to it , dipping may be a better option

True. For the letters, I may see if I can get a set of the old style letters that don't have the "slots" in them and have those painted and installed. I think the spacing would be the same. Definitely not going to chase this mod, just thought it would look pretty good and would do it if the test piece comes out okay.....

They will probably put some flex agent in the clear before they apply it. I have seen it done before. It all depends on what look you are going to for. It would be interesting to see when you have it done. I just have a difficult time trying to picture what you are trying to accomplish. Take some good high res pictures.

I guess the best way I can desribe what I'm thinking it will all look like when it is done is that it would, from a normal distance, look like embossed or raised lettering/emblems since my car is black. Could possibly look interesting on a car with black stripes too. I'm also having them drill the holes for the JLT bezels while they have the bumper off (should make that process a lot eaiser). Gotta read some write ups on the JLT fresh air kit or else I'll go with brake ducts at some point (the bezels should look pretty cool by themselves in black anodized).

I can't add much on the paint technology and technique. But I do know that if you had a video of yourself side-swiping your garage door, we would have a darn good chance of raising $100,000 for the web site on America's Funniest Home Videos!!!!!!

he's the bodyshop guy painting my fender/bumper. This would be a side deal (he's able to use the bodyshops paint booth after hours on his own time). I've seen his car (not my style.........not even sure what it is, like and old Continental or something like that.............lowered to the ground). Paint looks great. I'm skeptical on the lights, since there's a seller on ebay that will sell a set of tails/3rd/bumper lights painted/smoked for 260 including the lights. At least that option lets me go back to stock if I don't love it.
