Flat Black GT500 Stripes - MrFarmdog Style!

When I first got my car I hated that it did not come with stripes so I purchased a set of Tungsten stripes and installed them myself. Now after two years I have had a chance to see the black SuperSnakes with flat black stripes and I think they kick A$$! So I decided to devote a special thread to this project.

My plan is to first make a set that is an exact replica of the GT500 stripes. Then make a second set of these that will eliminate the seams on the rear spoiler, above the faux gas cap and hopefully on the front bumper as well. This second set is what I plan to install on my car.

I started working on the templates today. This is a very tedious process as it takes a lot of back and forth in order to get the templates exactly right. I have completed the back of the car and am working on the hood now. I hope to have all the stencils completed in the next few days then the real work begins...

Once the stencils are done I will remove the old stripes. Normally this requires removing the faux gas cap and the SHELBY letters on the rear deck lid. Once the stripes are off I will inspect the paint and see if any work needs to be done. When I am satisfied with the condition of the paint then I will start the install. I will be using Oracal 751 which is an 8 year vinyl.

I will post up pics as I move through the process for those who are interested. Stay tuned!!!

I just saw a black Shelby with flat black stripes a few minutes ago here in town. It looked great. I think you will be very happy with that look.

I have the black with alloy and I often wondered if I should have the over the tops installed to match. If you create this in flat black, that would look better. Would you be willing to sell sets? and will you be making a complete package set, meaning the side as well? Heck after buying the SHELBY template, I would be interested in either a full set of flat black or matching over the top in alloy.

Finally got a chance to do some work on this project today.

Here are a few pics of my car before stripe removal...

Then I started pulling stripes. It took me about a half hour total to remove the stripes. Just get a fingernail under them and start pulling. Most stripes came off in one piece. It was easy.



The car was kind of dirty so it looks like it left more shadow on the car than it really did.


To remove the stripes on the hood I had to remove the washer nozzles. Just pull on the hose to remove from the nozzle.



The washer nozzles have plastic retaining clips on each side under the hood. Just push them in and push up on the nozzle to remove from the hood.

Pulling the stripes was easy. No tools needed. Heating them in the sun did make it easier but not needed.

Notice that I removed only the letters that were on the stripes and the faux gas cap. The template I made for letter installation will make reinstalling them a snap! Just overlay the template and install them in place!

Notice the lines where the stripes were located. This is actually stripe adhesive that must be removed. To do this I used Goo Gone Automotive product and a shop towel. I used a liberal amount of Goo Gone on the towel and lightly rubbed the lines where the edges of the stripes were. I let it sit for a few minutes to soften up the adhesive then went back over it again to make sure I removed all of it. Then I rised it well with water, immediately followed by a good washing with McGuires car wash and another good rinse. The removed all of the adhesive.

Next I gave the car a real good washing checking everything over to make sure all the residue was gone and that all the water spots were removed. I drove the car down to a cove in our neighborhood to get it in some sun and took at few pics.

I will probably start cutting stripes and start installing them tonight. I hope to have the install finished tomorrow!
