Default Nitrogen or air in tires?

This issue came up in another tread. I thought this would be a good place to discuss this issue. The link below has some good info.
Pros, cons of using nitrogen in tires

Nitrogen in tires is the biggest scam there is, IMO.

The only place I can see using it is if you track (race) your car. Don't see the need for every day driving.

I agree rpretzel. The issue is whether or not your racing, otherwise there is no advantage for street cars. According to Bridgestone engineers its all about the moisture present with the O2 or the nitrogen. Can't avoid this.
Nirtogen may seal better, although ntirogen may be a drier gas than O2...its of no advantage to street cars. Not worth the money.

Default Re: Nitrogen or air in tires?

I have a friend who owns a tire shop, and he's been bugging me to have it done. He'd do it for free, and I'm still reluctant to do it. My concern is getting out somewhere on the road and having a low tire. You can add air, but then you have to have the tire sucked out and nitrogen put back in once you get home. To me, it's more trouble than it's worth.

I was going to use Argon. That way, if the tires get hot enough, they'll glow a really cool shade of blue.

I've never understood the concept as it is only available at dealers.

What if your down a tad on the right front and your on a road trip?

Does one just put normal air in with the Nitrogen?

And last but not least, the idea of paying (up to 10 bucks a corner) for "Air" no matter what is it's molecular make-up is, to me, is like throwing cash into the fireplace.

Hell, you can by a good size bottle of JD instead with 40 bucks!

I'm going to start using uranium hexafluoride. It will help with traction as it is the heaviest known gas (at standard temp). Of course, I'll only use it in the rear tires since the front surely doesn't need anymore weight.

You'd be adding unsprung weight. Not a good idea.

Quote:
The sprung weight of a wheel controls: a trade-off between a wheel's bump-following ability and its vibration isolation. Bumps and surface imperfections in the road cause tire compression--which induces a force on the unsprung weight. In time, the unsprung weight then responds to this force with movement of its own. The amount of movement is inversely proportional to the weight - a lighter wheel which readily moves in response to road bumps will have more grip when tracking over an imperfect road. For this reason, lighter wheels are often sought for high-performance applications. In contrast, a heavier wheel which moves less will not absorb as much vibration; the irregularities of the road surface will transfer to the cabin through the geometry of the suspension and hence ride quality is deteriorated.

SCAM... What a waste of money. For the everyday driver, this is a joke, and even to attempt to sell it is like selling swamp land.

Default Re: Nitrogen or air in tires?

we use nitrogen in all jets...simply because of the moisture issue with air, tire degration, and most importantly, the tires don't explode on impact when they land on the carrier deck. i'd say its over kill for day to day use on the street.

You could never get all the air out anyway so what would be the piont. If you have a good dryer on youre air suply most of the water can be removed from the air anyway.
