If I rember correctly.....the problem was not present prior to you putting the K&N filter on.

Oil flow is critical in this engine. The oil pump in this engine is adequate but not necessarily the best it could be IMO. (which BTW is one of the reasons the FordGT went to an external dry sump oiling system ) Therefore it is very important to use the best filter possible to ensure proper oil flow to the top of the engine where it's needed especially under extended high RPM operation.
Most aftermarket oil filters don't match the same flow characteristics as the Ford filters . There are only two filters currently being installed on the engines built at the Romeo Niche line.
One is the Fl-820s (on the GT-500) and the other is the FL-820 FRPP racing filter (on the FR500CJ)

i only use the two ford filters..may be a few dollars more for a filter...but a whole lot less for a rebuilt or new engine...

a couple notes.... No ticking today.... When I had the oil changed I went with the frpp oil filter and 5w-50 synthetic oil at dealership... I am going to dealer in am either way as I have to pick up a new air filter for my cai... I will speak with service manager about my experience... Also need to check and see if my 3rd replacement stripe for my hood came in as the one they just put on has about a one inch crease in it...

make the change regardless....Birdy is on target and this topic has been discussed in great detail...proper oil flow is critical, and anything other than a ford filter will likely cause issues...

I agree with all on the ford filter thing, however still want to say my noise was/is ( have not started it up for the day yet) even with the ford filter installed....

Chef (just a thought)you may have had one of the lash adjusters leak down while the car was shut down for a while. If it does it again try shutting it off for a moment then restarting to see if it pumps up again.

Guys:
drove the hot rod into work this morning....no ticking. I prefer the K&N due to the removal nut on the bottom. Just put a wratchet on it during an oil change and off it comes. Going forward, i will stick with the Ford product.

Thanks for your direction.

UPDATE!!!! My car suffers from Dealer fright...its allot like stage fright...I brought my car to the dealer to let him hear the ticking sound. It did it this morning in my garage for a couple minutes before i left. I went to the dealer ...told the service manager about it...we crank it up and no ticky...so I said lets wait a minute and again..no ticky..he asks me how many miles I tell just a smidge over 7,000, I told him how I just had the oil changed by them as well as the FRPP filter installed...told him how the noise was first noticed after the first oil change back in October...of course no sound..he tells me to keep my eye on it and listen for it etc...he reminds me I have plenty of time left on my warranty if something should arise and also that you know my friend would take care of it regardless anyway...so that is my update...no news....no sound and my car suffers from dealer fright and wont perform on command...

Chef, several comments:

1) Many noted a ticking when these cars first came out. Mastersmech had a bad one I believe...maybe PM him to see how that worked out. I heard it when I visited Virginia Beach.

2) I actually noted a ticking on my car once, but not anymore. It was much milder than the noise you have/had. Your noise sounds different than the noise I referred to in 1 above.

3) I'd keep a log of sorts. When you hear it, note down outside temperature, whether the car is hot or cold (how many hours did it sit before you started it up?), are you on a flat surface or a hill?, humidity?, etc. Maybe something will jump out as a consistent factor. Oil has different characteristics when it's cold (when I say cold, I mean ambient) ...so it would not surprise me if you hear it only when you first start the car each morning.

Good luck,

Dave

This is stolen from another site where it was stolen from yet another site and posted...this is worth reading if you are at all considering a cheaper filter option....Anyone else remember the old Midas commercials that said pay me now or pay me later?

Motorcraft FL-820s vs Ford Racing CM-6731-FL820 Oil Filters

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I thought you guys would be interested in reading this comparison study because so many people are under the impression that both of these filters are exactly the same just different labels. Look at the difference in total square inches of filtering media surface, Ford Racing is 250 square inches compared to 156 square inches for the Motorcraft, that's 94 square inches less! A larger filtering surface means more oil flow and greater filtering capacity. I get my Ford Racing filters from LateModel Restoration Supply OIL FILTER, FL820 - HIGH PERFORMANCE MISCFORD for $12.99. The Ford Racing filter is built using thicker metal (noticeably heavier) for the can material and the threaded base plate is real beefy with deep high quality machined threads. I was using the K&N HP-2010 until I read this article. The Motorcraft and Ford Racing Filters both utilize a base end mounted bypass valve instead of a top dome mounted bypass valve like the K&N and Purolator models. You can read about the importance of the bypass valve location in the oil filter comparison link I have attached for you below.

Read this link for the full comparison FL-820S Oil Filter Alternatives
