There are allot of GT500 Haters within the mustang family
its funny...I find that there are so many gt500 haters even in the mustang family. I have taken the liberty of taking some of these peoples opinions and posting them for your reading entertainment.. it one thing to state opinions, but when people post them like fact is when I laugh....anyways...
now this thread the original poster was asking the following
Well I guess the tiltle says most of it. I am thinking of trading my car in for a GT500. I have a friend that is a general manager at a Ford dealership, so trading my car in & being upside down is not a problem. He would also get me a very good deal on the GT500. That being said the car payments would still be quite a bit more.
So the question is, do I trade for the GT500 or put a whipple on my car? Opinions???
here is some of the responses showing a full filling of gt500 haterade
Wow this is an interesting thread. I think it all comes down to what your looking for. As far as resale value their is no question that the gt500 will win, especially if you leave it stock. But if you were to leave it stock then you would have paid $50,000 for a cow that makes 500 hp but has trouble leaving the mid 12 second zone.
On the other hand you have the drive train. A stout block, great flowing heads, and a factory supercharger. It is a blank canvas for making huge amounts of power, but all that power will stil have to move a tank of a car. So what you end up with is a vehicle that weighs near 4000lbs (which most of it is in the front), makes 700hp and has a very primitive rear suspention. All this equates to never ending burn outs, throttle feathering up until about 70 mph or so, and the road holding handling capabilities of a pick up in the snow.
Why???
If you were to leave it stock (except for maybe some exhuast and intake) go for it.
If your in the modifying game, stick with the gt which is lighter, and cheaper.
Another option is the great 03-04 cobras which in my opinion run circles around the gt500. It does not weigh as much, has a forged crank (unlike the gt500), and has an independant rear suspention . It can still make mountains of power, but has an eaiser time putting it down. Oh yeah they hold their value very well, and are actually rarer than the gt500s
and another twisted reply...now these were just a sampling of the most hatefull replies...allot of gt500 hatred out there
I am leaning towards the whipple, simply because you said you will be happy with 400rwhp why pay all that money when its more then what your looking for, and your going to be faster in a GT with the same HP specs as you are in a GT 500.
Im not sure why these guys are all going on and on about 1000hp or even 700rwhp?
as far as tires go thats a loosing situation no matter what, The GT500 failed on every single review on traction, bottom line is ford ****ed up there, how can a vette have a 355 tire and not hook up and a gt 500 thinks its going to hook up with 295, dont even think thats what they come with either Im been nice.
even then Id go with the GT cause of the weight diffrence, 500 lbs is a **** load and no matter how much power you have your going to notice that 500 lbs in every corner u take with the car, and IMO a modded GT done right looks better then the GT500, only one I like is the supersnake with the stripes and louvers to match the flat black effect, If they dont have the super snake hood im not a huge fan. Dont get me wrong but Ill take cautions ride, stangskeleton and many others mine been one of them anyday of the week in the looks department over gt500.
for 5 more grand more you can buy a c6 zo6 if your really looking to just go fast and you will easily beat the **** out of the gt500, sure say oh mod the gt500 and see what happens, even then your going to losse, the KR got its ass kicked by a stock Z06 in every department and cost alot more.
The reviews I have seen when shelby is compared to other cars its loosing almost every single one and is basically been called over priced and a fail. Only gt500 that are beating some cars in these test and reviews are the super snake but then it looses bad in the price tag department. only other cow it beat in most stuff was a s/c challenger that cost more then the super snake.
IMO people who think that the gt500 are going to be worth something like the old ones are on cloud 9, maybe if you buy it park it and dont touch it and it has 200 miles on it 30 yrs from now maybe then it may be worth what you paid for it even then doubt it. Theres way to many of them and way to many replicas and way to easy to replicate it so with that been said , not holding its value.
only real advantage I can see for what you are looking for would be the 6 speed wich would be nice incase u plan to go with 4.10s
of course I did reply to most of them..its very easy for some one to talk about the gt500 negatives when they google it and read it in a magazine...but in my OPINION..unless you have driven and or owned both, how can you give a legitimate opinion....here are a couple of my replies
this was to the first reply above
whew....I am glad I bought my 500+ HP snow plow....no snow where I live so I guess I wasted my money,.....jeesh...LOL
but seriously, the 03-04 cobras stock for stock will not run circles around the gt500...the problem is trying to find a 03-04 cobra stock.....I have run with the bulls per say and no doubt the 03/04 is fast....but my slow snow plow as you put it has done just fine with them
by the way around here (Tampa FL) the cobras are all over the place...a good deal can be had on one of them....I am not a fan of the 03/04 look and size...but they are sick beasts for sure when modded....
here was my reply to the other post...
now now Tomber.....your points are great opinions...and some of your facts are decent albeit exaggerated. Now as you know I have the utmost respect for you....however try not to quote some statements as you did above as factual. where are you reading a review that has considered gt500 an overprice and failure??? The ones I have read actually had gt500 beat several cars in several categories, but in the end they chose the other car on some occasions because of opinion...not a performance fact....lets look at the challenger vs gt500 article..the gt500 beat the challenger in every category and the overall was to choose the challenger??? that was as opinionated as it gets...other reviews fell in the same category.
ok, the resale value point is moot....in 10 years I will still be able to resell my gt500 for more than a modded gt...end of story....will I get 100K as some have said...absolutley not....I did not buy it for investment as cars are not an investment...too fun to be...but resale value wise..I will be able to sell a gt500 for more than a modded gt in years to come...
overall to the OP...if you really want a gt500 like you originally stated then the only way to satisfy your hunger (IMO) is with a gt500....can you build a faster GT....absolutely....can I build my gt500 to be faster than a gt...absolutely...can I mod the hell out of any car to make it faster...absolutely..it all depends on what you want...only you can truly decide if it is worth it...you will get allot of opionons here and as always when asked the haters come out in full effect on both sides of the spectrum....now me being someone like others here Saddle UP, PL stang etc who have or currently own both...we can say more than what someone states that they have googled or read in a magazine...we can give you an educated opinion based on owning both etc....but it will come down to what you like....if you truly want to buy a gt500 and can afford it....then you will get it...believe me....do a search on past threads with my name...you will see where I asked the same question a year ago and the responses I got were just the same..it was not until I drove it that I made my 100% decision.....if you are looking for a race car....build a race car....if you are looking to mod the hell out of the look of your gt then do that....but if you want a shelby gt500..then get one....only you can decide...
