..I have been challenged by a variety of cars; the only ones who were jerks about it drove mustangs (one was the newer body style). It is what it is...............................

Chef, I happen to agree with some of the things mentioned, but I think the OP goes overboard. Let me give a few examples:
1) The car being a "cow". Is the car heavier than I would like? Yes. However, he says a Mustang GT is much lighter. While this is true, he conveniently leaves out the fact that by adding a Whipple to the car, with an intercooler and the associated fluids, he'll be adding considerable weight to the GT. In addition, does he want to be able to STOP that car? The GT's brakes are not nearly as good...and if they want to upgrade, they'll again be adding weight. Want better fuel economy via the two overdrive gears? Well...that's more weight there. I could go on and on about the looks and all...but even focusing on his weight comment, I think you have two choices. A) A modded GT that's as fast as a GT500 or faster, but you won't be able to stop it or B) A modded GT that accelerates and stops like a GT500, but weighs about the same. 2) The car having a "primitive" rear suspension. I would not have used the word primitive, but it is less than perfect. However, had Ford put an independent rear in it, the weight would be up...which is one thing he's complaining about! In addition, as George mentions, even with that "primitive" suspension this car outhandles the previous generation due to better torsional rigidity/stiffness. 3) Feathering the throttle up to 70 mph? I have a TVS with about 600 RWHP and I don't have to feather the throttle past about 30 or so...that's simply bad information. 4) I'm not so sure I agree that a modded GT would be "cheaper". A Mustang GT with no options is about $27k vs. about $43 for a GT500. $27k Base $6k Whipple S/C (I'm guessing a bit on the price, but my TVS was about this) $3k upgraded brake system to GT500 specs $2k upgraded wheels/tires $2k labor to install _______________ $40k total And note that this would not get you leather interior, 6-speed trans, striping, better aerodynamics due to improved splitter/spoilers, and several other things. 5) Terminators will not 'run circles around' a GT500. They make quite a bit less power, but due to their lighter weight it's a close race. 6) I do agree with the comments about Ford leaving something on the table in terms of the rear suspension. The wheel hop is a horrible design miss. The tires are way too small IMO. 7) The comment about the vette is bogus. YOu cannot get a Z06 for $5 grand more, they sticker between $73k and $80k depending on trim line. Again they are leaving out a ton of info. The vette only carries two people and it's got a very different seating position (I could never own one as I find the seating position too uncomfortable and the cockpit too cramped). 8) I can't comment on his statement about thinking the GT500 will be worth a ton of money in the future for two reasons...first, I don't know, and second, I don't care! I didn't buy mine for an investment.

don't forget foged internals ;) That's a big one for the GT500 that sets it apart from not only the GT but also the Chalenger and other players.
I have to feather up to about 60 I still love my pig though.

I like everything on the front of the 2010 other than the 1 big hood vent. I wish they put scoops and ram air on the top rather than in the grill and left the snake where it belongs but no biggie. I'm digging the interior still other than some of the extra lighting but again I wouldn't complain about that if some one wanted to give me one. I like the aero improvements. I really have decided I quite like the look of this car...until i get to the back end. I still am not loving that. I'm trying and hope in person I like it better. maybe if it was black....

they redesigned the splitter. is that a air gap in the middle for more flow to the HE? As i like the front end design, im in aggreement with iceman about the hood vents and rear.

The ones that I have noticed are the younger ones. They in most part drive the fox bodied cars because that is all they can afford right now. They are only going off their own experience and what they have been told by others on these forums. I know someone that has a 04 Cobra and lays down 575RWHP but he has a ton of money stuck into that car. I am betting he is pushing close to the weight as our cars have with all his add ons. He doesn't trash talk the GT500's since he is a middle aged guy.
Alot of the younger ones also think that all the GT500 owners are rich in some way or another. They got that impression from when the ADM was high on this car and people were buying them up. They also think the car is a pig because of the size of the car compared to the fox bodied cars. While that is true, we are only 4 inches wider and 6 inches longer than they are. Yep, that would some weight. I do like all Mustangs from every generation but the S197 platform has all of the previous generations beat. Except for the 67-69 models which the S197 resembles quite nicely.

Heres the problem I have,
I am a car guy, doesnt matter what you drive, if you take pride in it, make it how you want and its a beast ;P I will appreciate it. Hell I drive a gt500 and a ford focus, I cant discriminate, I like them both for different reasons, and My focus setup is more of a sleeper car with enkei rims, the only way you can tell its modded is from the borla exhaust. I was part of a Foci club, which most were complete ricers, not my style, but they were getting those things up to ridiculous horsepower to weight ratios. So I apprecited those as well. With that being said, I wouldnt trade the gt500 for anything either, thats my beast. So basically let the haters hate, I just understand how you can be a car enthusiast and dog on someone elses ride. well... unless its a z06 (just kidding) |
