Why You Never Buy a North-Facing House

Never again will I buy a north-facing house! I get to deal with never-melting snow and sheets of ice while the neighbors across the street have nothing.




and I finally had to shut off my waterfall in the backyard. It froze solid a couple days ago.

I also have a North facing house. Not only is it a pain in the winter with the snow not melting, it also stinks in the spring if you like flowering plants. For many years I tried growing Azalia's, Roses, Impatients, etc. They'd live a few months and then eventually die. I finally gave up and had to go with shade loving plants.

mine faces northeast, and if I did not shovel the drive out front, it would stay covered in ice and snow for most of the winter.......

Wow. I guess California's lack of snow in my area really sucks! It's pretty hard to pull my car out of my clear and clean driveway!

and that's a good thing. It was a little chilly on the way to the doc today. Had to put shoes and socks on. Looks like 70's by tuesday....whew! What a long winter it was!

In Minnesota, we faced south, but our biggest problem were the short days this time of year. Sun came up around 730 and went down about 430.....it hung so low in the sky there was no chance to melt anything.

If you woulda saw my house when I first bought it, you'd become a gardener too. The whole front of my house was covered in giant Arborvitae plants which covered all the windows. I yanked them all out and replanted them with some nice scrubs, some of which didn't fair well due to having a north facing house. And then for the next few years after that, trying to find shrubs that grow well with limited sun.

As long as the water keeps moving through the system it never freezes. I just need to make sure the intake boxes are ice free but the moving water is never a problem. I use 4 2500 gal per hour pumps. The elec bill is killer - the meter spins like a merry go round but the beauty is worth it.

I would say that is normally true, be we had a night that got down to -18, and my pond froze solid (about 2 feet deep) even with the pump running. Woke up in the morning and it sounded like the pump was trying to pump ice cubes. I just hope it still works in the spring.

Ouch! that is really cold Rick...I hope it works in spring also. Keep the Shelby warm ya hear.
