Locking Gas Cap Installation

Here's a easy mod for those of you who might be considering a locking gas cap. I just installed a Motorcraft locking gas cap that looks just like the stock cap. The part number is 8L3Z-9030-E.



I pryed off the button that secures the plastic strap with a plastic prybar and popped the new one in place - simple!

..thanks for posting, I think it is a very useful mod, not for saving gas, but to stop anyone from putting something in the tank......

I used one from Stant (just get the one for a new mustang, they are all the same), looks very original, but you do have to reuse the retainer strap, no real problem, but you have to be willing to stretch it a bit with the tip of a screwdriver to get it off the old one and on the new one......

I didn't check local dealer pricing on the cap so I don't know what they cost locally. I purchased from Silverstatefordparts.com (Gaulpin Ford) for $35.71 + shipping. These are more expensive than Stant caps but I preferred something OEM with the same internal design as the stock fuel cap.

The locking gas cap is something that totally surprised me when I moved to the US 10 years ago.

In SA, it was standard on ALL cars. I was totally shocked that nobody had these on their cars.

fyi, Stant makes almost all of the gas caps for US manufacturers, the one they sell is actually the same as the mustang oem, but with a lock; just trying to save folks a few bucks if they don't mind not having a motorcraft name, since they are only 13 bucks or so; the only downside is that you have to use the original strap...

The Mustang Stant cap I bought a year ago looked a little different than the stock cap on the GT500, but seemed to fit just fine. There were some warnings in the owner's manual about using an incorrect fuel cap and since the Stant looked different from the inside, I returned it to Pep Boys rather than take the risk. Perhaps they have an updated design now that looks just like the stock cap.
