Custom wood keychains made by Dave’s Wood Details. Made from solid cherry in my woodshop, with custom mixed colored epoxy inserted stripes, and clear coated with water based UV resistant finish, these are truly custom pieces.



I’m set up for GT500s such as the one shown, but I could utilize other metal fobs such as the other two shown below….although there would be an additional charge for any non-circular, extra large, or medallions to account for additional design work as well as costs for shipping different medallions to me that I don’t currently have. I only have one of the square 'tri bar pony' items, but I have already pre-ordered about a dozen of the GT500 units shown.

I’ve made 4 of these already, and the one pictured is my personal keychain. I can currently support stripes in blue or red. I could do other colors, but the cost of doing so requires that I purchase expensive aniline dyes, so I would need significant orders of a given color to make it worthwhile. I may be able to get black by mixing blue and red, or I could use another technique such as painting the wood with spray paint and then using clear epoxy…so let me know if another color interests you.

These would make excellent Christmas or birthday gifts, or buy one just for shows. If you order standard designs such as the one shown, I can have them to you in about 2-3 weeks. For custom designs add two weeks minimum depending on requirements.

To avoid high shipping costs, these will come in an envelope wrapped in a protective cardboard. Not the most attractive shipping, but I’ve tried it and it works. If you’d prefer a more robust shipping, add $2 and I’ll buy a bubble-lined envelope.

I have a few collectible Mini Cooper ones that would look pretty darn nifty done up like this. It would make it different than everyone elses. Heck, maybe even get some Mini sales out of it.

Post a pic of one with a dimension or a tape measurer next to it and I'll see if it will work. Is it round?

Oval or square are more difficult...not even sure if I can do oval...would have to make a template jig. Round is the easiest.

TG has the camera with him at VIR. I'll post a pic of a few I'd be willing to play with in the next few days. If I see one listed on eBay I'll post a link. I have some pretty neat ones. Some are very hard to come across, but that's fine. I like the idea of being different.

to make these, I start by taking a blank of wood and using a router to make two shallow channels with a cove bit to accept the stripes.


I then take some catalyzed professional epoxy like this and mix it.


Then I add add an aniline dye...just a drop too much and the color is too dark. The dye is quite expensive...and the epoxy hardens in less than 20 minutes, so you must work fast.


I must tape the ends of the wood or the liquid will simply flow off the edges...it must have a reverse miniscus so that I can make it flush with some additional work.



After that I need to cut the face


And then the sanding begins...
I had to experiment with this, but the right combination takes me through 7 grits all the way to 2000 to give the stripes a glossy look.

Then I flip the fob over and drill a hole for the medallion using a forstner bit...which is a bit that drills a very clean, flat-bottomed (like Dan ) hole.


Then I put in the emblem, pour some clear epoxy mix over it, and let it set up a bit. If any air bubbles arise, I use a propane torch to gently heat the top and they will burst the bubbles to create a smooth finish.

Finally, a coat of clear finish is applied....and voila!!


Truly a custom piece...I really like mine.
