My company just announced a recall of 400 shop employees. These are to support the Chrysler business as it ramps back up since they are now out of bankruptcy.

This does not affect me directly, but it's good for my company.

I went down to headquarters and met with the 2 top guys. They have known me for 20+ years. I told them that I want to stay working here and that I have no problem giving up being a supervisor and going back to work as a Journeyman carpenter untill work picks back up. I told them that I understand it could be a year or 2 and that I would work my butt off for them back out in the field.

They said they could tell how enthused I was and that I had the mindset for it, which some of the others didn't. They commented on what great shape I was in and they said that they knew I would do fine back out in the field. They told me about 2 different projects that they had in mind to put me on. I said great....now I won't go look for work.

The projects might not start right on Aug. 3rd so there might be a short lag after my current job ends July 31st. I said no problem...as long as I know that I'm going back to work for you guys....I can wait untill the project kicks off.

I have no problem going back to work as a Carpenter. That is my roots and that is why I never pulled out of the carpenters union.

Today I was told that my position working back in the field as a journeyman carpenter is reserved and ready for me after my current supt. position ends on Aug 31st. The project is getting ready to start very soon and should go thru the winter.

It made me feel happy that someone is watching my back. I've been feeling pretty down the last few weeks and have not been sleeping well because of it.

I'm losing all my perks, company truck and gas card and taking a 31% cut in pay.....but I'm keeping employed locally. Keeping my Union Pension fed so I can meet my retirement goals and keeping my Health benefits for my family. Journeyman Carpenters pay is pretty good too.

Those are the things that count.....and now I can sleep better.

At least you've protected your retirement benefits. That has a lot of significance these days.

That's good news Robby. No one wants to take a step back from where they are today, but in my mind a step back is better than falling down the entire flight of stairs so to speak.


With your new truck, your new physical fitness, and your "can do" attitude, I'm sure you'll be the first one they hire back to your old position - or higher!!

It's hard to describe how I felt at 1pm today when I heard this news. I can tell you that I thanked my Father right afterwards.

I have another arrangement that I'm working on withn another division boss. It's a better deal...but it does not look like it will pan out. It could...but I dunno. If it does pan out.....the other boss is fine with it and told me so.

Keeping a steady feed into my retirement benifits are so very importand to me. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and every year I need to see just a little more light. 5 more years baby, and I could collect a pesnion if I want too...or keep working.

The boss that is putting me back to work said he will keep me busy untill something pops. He used some strong words that made me feel very good.

One of them was "gaurenteed".

Great news Grabby. A couple of Beth's bigger employers that she recruits for have recently lifted their hiring freezes, so there's definitely some movement in the job market afoot (maybe not widespread yet, but loosening??). I had myself some good news yesterday. I had been worried that my position would remain only as long as we were still attending to finishing cleaning up the unwind of our fund. We filed K1's to the partners last week, which was amongst the biggest parts of that. Our annual cost of living increases are usually effective in August, but I had simply assumed there would be none as a result of all that went on. Mr P wanted to assure folks of their status and approved small cost of living raises for all of us, so I am feeling lots better now as well.
